WILMINGTON, N.C. – This was a first for us.
Erin Simpson, the advisor for the Laney High School Creative Writing Club, invited me to speak before about 30 student club members in their first meeting of the year.
We were happy to see the turnout and the enthusiasm the students – with a wide variety of interests in various areas of journalism – exhibited during an hour-long gathering in the school’s media center. They’ll be the future creators in one form of journalism or another.
Carter Hermann and Maddy McGuire, the co-managers of the club, gave us a warm welcome that included giving me a souvenir shirt from the school. Laney is the high school that basketball legend Michael Jordan attended, and now my grandson Sterling Stewart is in his senior year there.
